With Ed Bauman, president of Bauman College, at the NANP conference in San Francisco.

Last week, I attended the annual conference for the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. The conferences are always informative, exciting and a little overwhelming. Nutrition is such a dynamic field. I feel so fortunate to be 'in the mix' and love sharing the excitement and breakthroughs with my clients.

To Your Health and Happiness,

Margi

P.S. I'm working on something extra special to share with the members of the Nourish Community. I can't wait to share it with you at the end of this week. Stay tuned!

Diets Make You Fat!diet

Summer is fast approaching and brings up questions like, "What's the best diet to lose ten pounds in two weeks?" Argh! Diet is a four-letter word. Dieting is tightly woven into our social fabric and causes more harm than day-long binges of donuts and ding dongs.

Your body is brilliant and when you restrict food and nourishment, it will do what it needs to survive. Here are just 4 scary reasons to throw in the towel and stop battling your body.

1. Dieters become progressively heavier, with every diet. I believe it, because I've lived it. Diets slow your metabolism. When glucose (fuel) becomes scarce, your body looks elsewhere for fuel. It taps into your muscle stores. Sort of like burning your furniture when you run out of firewood. Muscles burn more calories to exist, so loss of muscle slows your metabolism and you have to work harder and eat less to keep the weight off. Just ONE diet heightens your body's awareness of the trauma of famine and alters your metabolism to protect itself against future famines. If you are young and haven't jumped on this roller coaster yet, BEWARE, please don't do it. Oprah Winfrey knows this all too well.

2. Your body temperature drops as a protective measure, like lowering your thermostat to save energy. Your thyroid hormone levels drop and remain low until your body receives sufficient calories. As we age, our thyroid is less resilient and doesn't spring back. The stress of dieting is a major contributor to the rise of hypothyroidism in women. Low body temperature is also associated with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

3. Low calorie dieting leads to nutritional deficiencies. ANY diet that recommends cutting out one of the macro-nutrients: fat, protein or carbohydrates, sets you up for failure. Our bodies need all three, regularly. Low fat diets have been a colossal failure. We're a fat phobic nation and look where that has gotten us!

4. YOUR BRAIN SHRINKS. Have you ever felt irritable, anxious, moody or depressed when dieting? Lack of protein in a diet, because it's associated with fat such as eggs, nuts, cheese and avocado, leads to low serotonin levels. No surprise, this leads to cravings for donuts, chips and Milky Way lattes to feel better.

Nourishing Bite

Don't diet, SLOW DOWN instead.

Rushing through your day, you're likely to:

  • Skip breakfast
  • Eat fast and furiously
  • Miss your "full signal"
  • Eat faux foods like protein bars
  • Avoid preparing and enjoying your meals
  • Feel dissatisfied and undernourished

Avocado Toast with Sprouts

AvocadoThis is a family favorite for breakfast ~ easy and filling.
It’s more of an assembly than a recipe, but requires some advanced preparation.

Ingredients:

2 slices Ezekiel (sprouted wheat) bread, toasted
(you can use gluten free or any bread of your choice)
1 avocado, mashed
1 handful sprouts, preferably home-sprouted. (If you buy from the store, make sure they are fresh as commercial sprouts can harbor mold)
¼ teaspoon Gomasio

Gomasio is a sesame salt, and popular seasoning in Japanese and macrobiotic foods. Goma-sesame seeds and sio-salt in Japanese. It reduces your use of salt and adds more flavor when seasoning soups, salads, grains or vegetables. I sprinkle it on almost everything. Keep refrigerated, if not using right away.

To make Gomasio:

Toast ½ cup of sesame seeds in a skillet over medium high heat. Toast until golden, about 5 minutes. Stir seeds several times and watch carefully as they burn easily. When seeds have cooled, stir toasted sesame seeds with 1 teaspoon of sea salt. For more flavor, grind the sesame seeds and salt togther in a spice grinder.

Avocado Toast:

Spread half the avocado on each piece of toast. Sprinkle with gomasio and top with sprouts of your choice. I like clover, radish and lentil sprouts. Sprouts are great source of vegetarian protein.

About Margi

I'm Margi McDaniel, Certified Nutrition Therapist, or 'Nutritionista' to my friends and family. I live in a small town in the mountains of Idaho. McCall has no movie theatre or concert hall, and living here requires a good imagination and ability to create our own fun. However, it does provide some excellent ingredients: A pristine lake, ample snowfall for skiing, white water for rafting, and playful friends.

My path to Certified Nutritionist was a long and winding road, including 25 years in the food and hospitality industry. The 70-hour workweeks, lack of exercise, and high stress took their toll. More than once, I found myself looking for answers and comfort in the refrigerator! I was overweight and, according to my doctor, was suffering from adrenal exhaustion.

One Christmas, my 10-year old son said, "Santa spends more time in this house at Christmas than you do!" What a gift and wake up-call for me. The answer inspired me to obtain a degree as a Master Nutrition Therapist, from the Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver, CO.

My clients know that nutritional support is a critical ingredient in feeling great. A healthy, balanced life is a journey not a destination, much like a marriage. I am here to educate, support, and empower you, provide accountability and celebrate your success with you.
